• Nosing: This is the rounded, protruding edge of the stair tread that overhangs the riser below.
  It’s the part you step on when going up or down the stairs.
• Back Piece: This is the part of the tread in the back that locks into your nosing.
• Lock: This is a mechanism, usually a tongue-and-groove system, that connects the nosing and
  back piece together, ensuring a secure fit.

1. Clear the way

• Remove Old Materials: Completely remove any existing carpet, flooring, or coverings
  from your stairs and risers. Use a pry bar or scraper if necessary.
• Clean Up Residue: Thoroughly scrape away any leftover adhesive, tape, glue, or other
  debris. A clean, smooth surface is essential for proper adhesion of the new treads.
• Vacuum and Wipe: Vacuum the stairs and risers to remove dust and small debris. Then,
  wipe down all surfaces with a damp cloth to ensure a clean installation.

2. Achieve a Smooth Surface

• Sand for Smoothness: Sand down any bumps, ridges, or uneven areas on the stairs and
  risers to create a smooth, level surface. This will ensure a seamless installation and
  prevent any bumps or gaps in the finished staircase.
• Clean Up Dust: After sanding, vacuum the stairs and risers again to remove any dust
  created during the sanding process. Use a tack cloth to clean any remaining fine dust particles.

Start from the Bottom

• Work Upwards: Start with the first (bottom) riser and then the first stair tread. Always
  begin your installation at the bottom of the staircase and work your way upwards.
  Aesthetically, this ensures the seam at the top of the riser as well as the seam at the
  back of the back piece are covered properly by the next piece. Installation beginning at
  the bottom also creates stability and prevents damage to newly installed treads.
• Maintain the Pattern: Continue this pattern—riser, tread, riser, tread—all the way to the
  top of your staircase.

1. Precise Measurements

• Use a Stair Jig: Utilize a stair jig or template to accurately measure and mark each tread
  and or riser for cutting. This ensures a perfect fit and prevents gaps or overhangs.
• Cut Carefully: Use a diamond bladed saw, oscillating saw to carefully cut each tread and
  riser according to the lines you marked.

2. Install the Riser- After the riser is cut to your precise measurements follow the step below

• Place the riser against the vertical face of the step, ensuring it is flush against the top
  of the tread below. Secure it with construction adhesive. (Skip this step if using
  existing riser).

3. Install the Nosing- After the nosing is cut to your precise measurements follow the steps below

• Peel the Wax Paper: Carefully peel the wax paper off the adhesive backing of the nosing
  piece.
• Position Carefully: Align the nosing with the edge of the tread, ensuring its inside edge is
  flush against the existing tread’s nosing.
• Avoid Premature Adhesion: Don’t press down on the adhesive tape until you’re
  completely satisfied with the placement.

4. Secure the Nosing

• Apply Pressure: Once the nosing is positioned correctly, press down firmly along the
  entire length of the nosing to ensure the adhesive tape makes full contact with the tread.
  Use a roller to apply even pressure.

5. Install the Back Piece- After the back piece is cut to your precise measurements follow the steps below

• Peel the Wax Paper: Remove the wax paper from the adhesive backing of the back piece.
• Align and Insert: Align the lock on the back piece with the lock on the nosing at a 45-
  degree angle. Carefully insert the lock and gently lower the back piece onto the tread.

6. Double Check the Lock

• Ensure Secure Fit: Before fully pressing the back piece down, make sure the lock is
  completely engaged with the nosing. It should click or snap into place.

7. Secure the Back Piece

• Apply Pressure: Press down firmly along the entire length of the back piece to ensure a
  strong bond with the adhesive tape. Use a roller to apply even pressure.

8. Move to the Next Step

• Repeat the Process: You’re now ready to install the next riser. Repeat these steps for each
  tread and riser until you reach the top of the staircase.

• Protect Yourself: Wear safety glasses and gloves during the removal and installation process to
  protect yourself from sharp objects, debris, and adhesive.
• Take Your Time: Measure twice, cut once! Careful measurement and placement will result in a
  professional-looking finished product.
• Read the Instructions: Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific stair
  treads for any additional guidance or recommendations.
• Use Proper Tools: Having the right tools, such as a square, oscillating saw, rubber mallet, level,
  and measuring tape and stair jig will make the installation process smoother and more efficient.
• Enjoy Your New Stairs: Once the installation is complete, step back and admire your beautiful
  new staircase!
